TEA TREE OIL / 30.07.24 Known for its skin conditioning and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil (TTO) is widely used in the cosmetics industry. A recent review and proposed re-classification of TTO by the European Union Review of Active Chemicals (RAC) as a 1B reproductive toxin, could see the likely ban of products containing TTO within the European Union.

The AgriFutures Tea Tree Oil Program invests in targeted tea tree oil research to strengthen the Australian tea tree oil industry. The program addresses challenges such as foreign and adulterated tea tree oil products, supports the long-term sustainability of production, and identifies and manages key regulatory risks.
Its focus is on building a prosperous and competitive tea tree oil industry in Australia through three core objectives:
The AgriFutures Tea Tree Oil Program RD&E Plan outlines and balances key research, development and extension (RD&E) priorities to drive industry productivity, profitability, and sustainability.
New AgriFutures Tea Tree Oil Program RD&E Plan coming soon.
The Australian tea tree oil industry operates under a statutory levy of 25 cents per kilogram of oil produced, collected at the first point of sale. The levy funds research, development and extension (RD&E) activities managed by AgriFutures Australia. The levy does not apply if the total annual levy payable is less than $25 (GST exclusive).
Levies are collected under the Primary Industries Levies and Charges Acts and may support biosecurity, residue testing, marketing, and RD&E. For tea tree oil, AgriFutures Australia invests the RD&E levy in line with the industry’s Strategic Plan and receives Commonwealth matching funding (up to 50c per dollar of eligible expenditure), along with third‑party contributions.

Continued investment in tea tree oil research is critical to improving supply, stimulating global demand, and ensuring effective adoption of RD&E outputs. By focusing on innovation and sustainability, the program supports the growth of a strong and competitive Australian tea tree oil industry.
We are committed to collaborating with all stakeholders in tea tree oil production—from growers to processors and exporters—to identify key research priorities and direct program investments where they will deliver the greatest impact. The program also works closely with the Tea Tree Oil Advisory Panel, drawing on industry expertise to guide investments that strengthen productivity, profitability, and the long-term sustainability of the sector.

The Australian tea tree oil industry is a priority for AgriFutures because it represents a high-value, export-driven agricultural sector built around a uniquely Australian native plant, Melaleuca alternifolia.
Tea tree oil Australia produces is globally recognised for its purity, quality and compliance with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. Around 90% of tea tree oil production is exported, making the industry highly important to the Australian economy and sensitive to global regulatory changes.
The sector includes approximately 140 growers managing around 4,800 hectares, primarily in northern New South Wales and the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland. This makes growing tea tree a significant contributor to regional employment and economic resilience.
AgriFutures supports the industry through research and development that:
Australia is considered a world leader in premium tea tree oil Australia supplies to North America, Europe and other global markets, making continued research investment critical.
Collaboration is central to how AgriFutures delivers outcomes for the Australian tea tree oil industry. The Tea Tree Oil Program works closely with growers, researchers, supply chain participants, exporters and regulatory and trade government departments to ensure levy investments directly support the sustainability, profitability and global competitiveness of the tea tree oil Australia produces.
A dedicated AgriFutures Tea Tree Oil Industry Advisory Panel plays a key role in guiding the program. The Panel is made up of industry experts and representatives who help identify RD&E priorities, advise on investment decisions, facilitate information sharing between stakeholders, and ensure research outcomes are practical and easily adopted across the industry.
The RD&E priorities outlined in the AgriFutures Tea Tree Oil Program RD&E Plan 2026–2029 were developed through extensive industry consultation. This included strategy workshops, draft reviews and formal input from the Australian Tea Tree Industry Association (ATTIA Ltd) and industry representatives. This ensures that research funding reflects real-world challenges facing the tea tree oil market, including regulatory pressures, export access and sustainable tea tree oil production.
Australian tea tree oil is widely used across health, cosmetic and household sectors due to its well-established antiseptic and antimicrobial properties.
Health & Skincare
Tea tree oil is commonly used in topical antiseptics, acne treatments, shampoos and natural skincare products. It has been used in pure form and formulated products for over 70 years.
Household Products
Many disinfectants, surface cleaners and natural cleaning solutions contain tea tree oil due to its antibacterial properties.
Animal Care
Tea tree oil is incorporated into pet shampoos and topical treatments in controlled formulations.
Aromatherapy & Wellbeing
As an essential oil, it is used in blends for relaxation and general wellness applications.
Because the global tea tree oil market is heavily focused on cosmetics and personal care, regulatory compliance and scientific validation are key priorities for maintaining export demand.
Yes. Tea tree oil production in Australia is supported by ongoing research to ensure long-term sustainability, resilience and market trust.
Tea tree plantations primarily operate in coastal regions of NSW and Queensland. Sustainable growing tea tree practices include:
The AgriFutures RD&E Tea Tree Oil RD&E Plan prioritises strengthening sustainable and resilient production systems. This includes maintaining the Tea Tree Breeding Program to develop genetic material that:
With growing global scrutiny around environmental standards, sustainability is central to protecting Australia’s position in the international tea tree oil market.
